PSHE

Subject Leader: Mrs Mackell

Our PSHE curriculum closely follows the PSHE association's Programme of Study.

The broad and balanced curriculum that we teach at Stella Maris covers many aspects of RHE and RSE that feed into PSHE.

Subjects such as RE, Science, Design Technology (Healthy Eating) and RSE all contribute to the wider subject of PSHE. During the year classes will also undertake lessons and activities teaching them about finance , how to be safe and also first aid.

The updated National Curriculum guidance on Relationships and Health Education as well as Relationships and Sex Education can be found by clicking on the link below.

RHE and RSE

Relationships and Health Education (RHE) is statutory in Primary Schools and Relationships and Sex Eductaion (RSE) is only statutory in Secondary schools but here at Stella Maris, like other Primary Schools we have adopted a scheme that allows us to teach RSE in a safe, caring and loving environment.

Our RSE curriculum is called, 'A Journey in Love.'

Detailed information about this programme for children in the Primary years along with our policy can be found on our Catholic Life tab and by clicking this link here.

PSHE - Intent

At St Stella Maris  Catholic Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life. PSHE is taught across the school from EYFS- Year 6 through a cross-curricular approach as well as discrete lessons to cover more specific areas of the curriculum. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Gospel Values; Love, Care, Share, Respect and Trust.  These values are all incorporated into our fundamental school rule: Treat others how you would like to be treated.

PSHE - Implementation

We guide our children to flourish and become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach PSHE according to the PSHE Associations Programme of Study. This ensures that children learn about health and well-being, relationships and living in the wider world.

At Stella Maris, we utilise a variety of resources and world-wide events to ensure full coverage of the PSHE curriculum. We follow guidance from the archdiocese, utilising ‘A Journey in Love’ to ensure teaching of Relationships and Sex Education is centred on God.  A Journey in Love ensures an in depth understanding of the Social, Emotional, Physical and Spiritual aspects of learning.

Our Core Values of Love, Care, Share, Trust and Respect underpin all that we do and we celebrate these through assemblies and class activities.

PSHE - Impact

Our PSHE curriculum supports the development of the skills, attitudes, values and behaviour, which enable pupils to:

  • Live out our Gospel values of love, care, share, trust and respect.
  • Understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level.
  •  Have a sense of purpose
  •  Value self and others
  •  Develop positive and healthy relationships both now and in the future.
  •  Make and act on informed decisions
  •  Communicate effectively
  •  Work with others
  •  Respond to challenge
  •  Be an active partner in their own learning
  •  Be active citizens within the local community
  •  Explore issues related to living in a democratic society
  •  Become healthy and fulfilled individuals

The children demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Liberty. They demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school which impacts positively upon pupil behaviour and learning across the wider curriculum.
